AT Form Factor Motherboard

The first modern day as we think of them today, mother board is the AT Form Factor. This very popular mother board was first developed by IBM in 1984. Because of the popularity of home based computers the AT mother outlasted the old PC style mother boards.

As the popularity of the AT form factor grew more and more PC manufactures began using the design, even though it was not a huge step forward in technology, just the fact that it was a tower and not the heavy and clunky desktop that you’ve seen on the movie Office Space made it attractive and compact.

The Primary job of a mother board is to enable all the devices connected to it to communicate together and with each other . Thus far there have been two very popular types of motherboards. The AT and the ATX. The Difference between this two great motherboards has everything to do with performance size what, type of computer chassis they fit into and what kind of connections they allow. The AT mother board is the older of the two and allows for -5 and 12volt lines from the main power supply. AT motherboards are really out of date according to today standards. If you are wanting to purchase an AT motherboard for an old computer system you will have a very difficult time finding a manufacture that will sell you one.

The best way to solve your problem would be to buy an old computer and hope that the motherboard is still in working condition. Ultimately you would to have purchase a new computer, throwing any amount of money into a AT system would just be a waste of you hard earned dollars. Not that you still can't find any these older systems around but the problem is that they are very out of date and pretty much useless for any kind of speed and performance. Unless you are using your computer to run Windows 95 and the only thing that you are doing is playing DOS games then the best recommendation would be to upgrade to a new system.
