It is not uncommon for most of us to spend the majority of our days working at a computer. A large proportion of that time will be spent online, using the internet to access various things we may need for work or for our entertainment.
In the past, to get access to the internet we had to use dial-up internet access, which used the public switched telephone network in order to establish a connection to an Internet service provider using telephone lines. You may remember the sound this used to make as it was trying to connect. In general using dial-up was a very slow process and one which was annoying as you were not able to use the internet at the same time as making a phone call.
And then broadband came a long and took away a lot of the frustrations associated with using the internet. Broadband is without a doubt faster and easier to use than what we used previously and it allows information to be sent and downloaded at a much quicker rate.
Unlike with dial up, you can get broadband in a number of ways either over cable or satellite or your good old phone line. The speed at which it travels allows you to access things online in real time, like TV or music. What's more is that unlike with more traditional methods you don't have to worry about whether you are online or not, with broadband you are online all the time. This really does make a big difference if you want to have quick and easy internet access, there is no waiting around to connect.
In most developed countries the big providers, such as AT&T Wireless Internet in the USA, charge you a standard monthly fee and give you unlimited internet access (within certain download limits). It's not like with dial-up where you are charged according to the amount of time you spent online.
As mentioned earlier, one of the greatest advantages is being able to use real time services. It may be the case, for example, that you are on the computer in a room which doesn't have a radio, instead of missing out you can listen on your computer using broadband as and when it is happening.
This is the same with television, one of the things which is becoming increasingly popular is a service known as connected TV. This is when the internet is integrated into modern TV sets and gives you a completely exciting and new TV experience. In short, there are endless opportunities on offer when you use broadband.
