There are several ways to partition a hard drive depending on the OS you are using and how do you want to do them, but here you are some samples on how to do it the easiest ways possible.
First you need to start the system in command prompt mode. If you are running windows you can do so in several ways too, depending on the Windows version. Once you are in the prompt console type FDISK and this will open the menu with several options.
If the case is that you are partitioning a second drive, enter 5 and then select the drive you want to partition, if it is not the case go to the next step and enter 1 standing for “Create DOS Partition or
Then you will be asked for the amount of disk space that you want to allocate to the second partition. Make sure to leave at least a good amount for your system partition (the partition where you plan to install your OS) because if not you will have a lot of problems when you want to install new programs in the system partition. This new partition will be assigned to the next drive letter by default.
You will be asked for the name of the new partition. You will be able to change this later so it doesn’t really matter but you have to input a name here. After you do that you will see the partition menu again. If you want to create more partitions you just have to do the same once and again till you have the number of partitions you want. When you are done exit from this menu by pressing Esc key.
The new partitions will not be available for you till you format them so you have to format each of them before using them. It is very easy to create new partitions in your hard drive but it is important to know what do you want your partitions for. In previous OS it was quite useful for a some factors like the speed in checking them, but nowadays they are very fast and the best utility of having a partitioned disk is to store data on the second partition so if you have to format the first partition you won’t lose your data.
Bear in mind that cutting and pasting from a folder in your HD to the same partition is a very fast operation, while doing it from a partition to another is as slow as copy / paste. If you plan to transfer a lot of data from one to another regularly you should reconsider your idea.
