When you are young and unable to protect yourself from bad guys and strangers, your parents are there to protect your. Now that you are older and have your own credit card or debt card, you must learn to protect your self from those bad guys! You need to be safe when you are online. Your Social Security number, credit card number and online banking accounts must be protected. If you are running spyware protection software and antivirus software you are you are at least headed in the right direction, but did you know that there is more that you can do? You should be able to completely manage the security of the important private information and keep it away from the eyes of those who should not see it.

There is not a secret, but there are key aspects to look for when you are on a website that is asking for secure information. The tool that allows the ability to send that information is the all important key to your online security. Make sure that your web browser is doing its job and protecting that information by being able to support 128-bit encryption. When you are at a normal webpage that is not secure the address of the website would normally be http://www.thedomain.com. For example if you went http://www.amecomputers.com it would be considered a normally website since we are not asking you for any personal information.

If went to a site and were to make a purchase the website (URL) which stands for Uniform Resource Locator should change, (when you are ready to pay) it would for from http to https. Notice the (s) at the end of the http? The (s) means that the website is using a (SSL) which stands for Secure Socket Layer. SSL is the correct method of conducting secure encrypted transactions. Now do not confuse the https with membership websites. If you have some kind of free membership at a website and you have to enter a user name and password the site most likely will not be using SSL to log you in, and that’s ok. Paid membership sites will mostly likely use SSL to protect there members privacy. You want to make absolutely   sure that when you are on a site and the site is asking you for personal information such as a credit card number or debt card number that the information is encrypted. The site address should start with (https).

In addition if you are using Internet Explorer you will see a padlock at the bottom of the page of the browser, the padlock means that you are engaged and conducting a secure transaction. If you right click on the padlock a window will open and it will show you detailed information about the type of encryption that is being used.

Altogether, remember that when purchasing products online https website address is good and http is bad only when you are entering personal financial information and potentially secure membership websites. Http is fine for all other websites!
